Leiden as a city evolved along the banks of the river Rhine, where the fortress (Burcht) had been built. Dutch nobles started to settle here as well. When you walk along Leiden’s many canals and almshouses, the local and experienced guide will sketch an image of the Golden Age. This era the majority of the people depended on the cloth industry. Tradesmen brought the goods produced in Leiden to faraway countries. It was a time when Dutch painters like Rembrandt flourished and Leiden University was founded.
In the Highlights of Leiden Walking Tour you will see all the famous Leiden sights. The Burcht, university, market, city hall are included. The tour starts at the square of the Peter’s Church (Pieterskerk). This church gave Leiden the iconic city emblem of two crossed keys. And did you know Leiden has the largest city festival in all of Holland? The Leiden Liberation, on October 3rd every year, celebrates the city becoming free of Spanish rule. And did you know that as a result of the liberation the people from Leiden had a choice in reward? For standing up against the Spanish they would be rewarded with either living tax free, or to have their own university. A year later, the university was founded, as one of the only ones in Europe at that time!
This and so much more is included in the Leiden Walking Tour! If you are interested to incorporate this in your tailor made tour, please send us a message at firstname.lastname@example.org to inquire after the possibilities.
