Leiden has had a special connection with Japan for centuries and in many suprising ways. This tour will tell you all about it!
In 1609 the Dutch received official permission to establish a trading post in Japan. This was first in Hirado, later in Deshima. Did you know that from 1640-1853 the Dutch were the only foreigners allowed to have trade relations with Japan? That means a friendship between the two countries that is 410 years old! The legacies of this special relationship can be found in many hidden places in the city of Leiden.
In this 2 hour walking tour an experienced guide will take you to all the Japan locations in Leiden. The guide will tell you all about the history of this special connection between Leiden and Japan. For instance, Leiden has 3 different Japanese poem murals with a beautiful story behind each of them!
We offer this tour only on July 17th at 14.00 hours. Please send us a message if you like us to offer this walking tour on another day (subject to availability of the guide and the number of participants).
